The Spice Trade Expedition: Two Guys, A Canoe and Jersey's Food Factories

Some of us will be sitting around Saturday watching football games, others will be out shopping, but at least two earnest guys from Jersey will be conducting a three day, two night tour by canoe around the industrial wetlands of Northern New Jersey on a mission to understand what they eat. They see themselves as modern day Marco Polos, seeking the source of 21st Century food flavorings. It's called the Spice Trade Expedition, and the open invitation tour marks the end of a two week documentary expedition lead by activists John Cohrs and Ryan Van Luit, who spent their time paddling past cargo ships and loading docs, smoke stacks and factories, talking to factory workers and locals about the impact of the nation's flavoring giants--with massive plants and blue chip names like East Coast, Summit Hill and Sterling. The documentarians say their Thanksgiving weekend tour will begin in Secaucus. Bring a sleeping bag, a sleeping pad, warm clothes and a tent "if you have it" and you too can get a glimpse of where that zesty spice on your Doritos comes from.
